Nylon is a synthetic fiber consisting of polyamides, macromolecules characterized by the CO-NH amide group. Nylon is made in several variations: PA 6,6 (polyamide) is made from hexamethylenediamine, while PA 6 is made from caprolactam.
Nylon is produced through a polymerization process, in which monomers join to form long molecular chains. The process can be of two types: staged or ring-opening. In the first case, it starts with two different monomers, one with an acid group and the other with an amine group, reacting with each other to form the amide bond and releasing a water molecule. This type of polymerization produces nylon 6,6 and other nylons with even numbers. In the second case, we start with a single cyclic monomer, which opens and polymerizes to form the amide bond without releasing water. This type of polymerization produces nylon 6 and other nylons with odd numbers.

This synthetic fiber has a high resistance to wear, traction, chemical agents and water. It is also light, elastic, wrinkle-resistant and easy to maintain.
Nylon has a melting point of about 220°C and a working temperature between -40°C and +100°C. It has a high linear thermal expansion and a thermal shrinkage for heating.
This fabric has a good resistance to alkalis, but is sensitive to acids and humidity, as it is hygroscopic. It is soluble in phenols, boiling acetic acid and formic acid.
This fabric has a dielectric constant of 3.5 and a dissipation factor of 0.023 at 1 Mhz. It has a dielectric strength of 100 KV/mm and a volume resistivity of 10^15 Ω-cm.
These characteristics make nylon suitable for the production of parachutes that have to be resistant, light, practical and durable. Nylon was used mainly for the spinnakers, the sails that are used in the downwind courses to increase the sail area and the speed of the boat. Nylon replaced silk or cotton, which were heavier and less resistant,

Wing parachutes: these are parachutes that have an aerodynamic shape that allows them to glide and control the direction and speed of descent. Nylon is used for its lightweight, elasticity and water resistance.
Reserve parachutes: these are parachutes that are used in an emergency when the main parachute fails to open or is damaged. Nylon is used for its strength, crushability and ease of maintenance.
Drone parachutes: these are parachutes that are attached to drones to ensure a safe landing in case of failure or loss of control. Nylon is used for its resistance to chemicals and temperature.
Cargo drop parachutes during flight: these are parachutes that are used to drop materials or equipment, such as supplies, vehicles or weapons, from the sky. Nylon is used for its tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
