NYLON

TECHNOFABRIC: CUSTOM PRODUCTION AND SALE OF NYLON FIBRE FABRICS FOR MULTIPLE INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION.

Nylon is the generic name for linear aliphatic polyamides, chemically related to proteins found in nature, such as silk and wool. This family of fibres is synthesised through a step-by-step polymerisation reaction.
Called a “revolutionary fibre”, Nylon was discovered in the laboratories of the giant DuPont, by researcher Wallace Hume Carothers in 1935. This is the first synthetic fibre in history – a true revolution for the textile fibre industry, with applications in many sectors.
Technofabric produces a wide range of Nylon fibre fabrics – raw, ennobled or dyed – based on customer requests. Thanks to intensive research and development activities, the company has created exclusive technology for achieving maximum dimensional stability for the fabrics and the minimum longitudinal elongation.

NYLON 6.6 AND NYLON 6: CHARACTERISTICS

Nylon 6.6 and Nylon 6, having very similar chemical properties, were the first to be produced.
Unlike cellulosic fibres, Nylons have a much greater strength. The higher elongation at break values give Nylon 6.6 and Nylon 6 greater resistance to impact, tearing and a better fracture energy. Another quality that is not found in cellulosic fibres is thermal shrinkage – being a thermoplastic material, nylon tends to shrink when exposed to heat.

In detail, the characteristics of Nylon 6.6 and Nylon 6 are:

  • • Immersion in Water: Nylon only undergoes a slight reduction in toughness, which is totally reversible upon drying.
  • • Moisture: The standard regain of moisture for polyester is 4.5%.
  • • Boiling Water: Nylon shrinks and slightly loses its strength due to hydrolysis – this tendency can be more pronounced in the presence of steam and even greater with high-pressure steam.
  • • Heat: Nylon is quite resistant to heat. It is not compromised by temperatures up to 180° C (except in cases of prolonged exposure). Nylon 6.6 melts at 250° C. Nylon 6 melts at 225° C.
  • • Flame: When subjected to flame, nylon tends to melt before catching fire. It burns less easily than cotton and rayon.
  • • Acid Resistance: Nylon shows good acid resistance under normal conditions of use but disintegrates with hot concentrated acids. Nylon is soluble in 80% boiling acetic acid and in formic acid at room temperature.
  • • Alkali Resistance: Nylon is alkali resistant.
  • • Solvents: Nylon is not attacked by normal hydrocarbon, aromatic or chlorinated solvents. It is soluble in phenols, especially in m-cresol. Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6, rather, react differently to boiling dimethylformamide. Where Nylon 6.6 is soluble, Nylon 6 is insoluble.
  • • Nylon does not undergo microbiological attack and is transparent to ultraviolet light.

THE MEANING OF NYLON

What does the term Nylon mean? There are various urban legends about the choice and meaning of the name Nylon.
Nylon was patented in the years when Japan had blocked silk exports from China, causing much inconvenience for various sectors, especially the wartime production of parachutes. In fact, one theory claims that Nylon is the acronym of Now You Lose Old Nippon. According to other reports, it comes from the abbreviation of “New York London”, again to symbolise the alliance between countries during the Second World War.
In fact, nylon was initially christened by its inventor as Fibre 6.6. Not finding the name to be very commercial, Dupont decided to change it to “No-run”, where run stood for “unravel”. To improve the sound, it was then transformed into “nyl”, three letters without any particular meaning, with the suffix “-on” added to align with the names of other fibres, such as rayon or cotton.

NYLON FABRIC

Nylon fabrichas higher strength and elongation at break values than fabrics in cellulosic fibres.
To design Nylon fabrics, it is necessary to consider the thermoplastic material’s tendency to shrink when heated and to carefully choose the extent the yarn is twisted in order to establish the degree of resistance to abrasion and fatigue.
To achieve woven Nylon with particular mechanical characteristics, it is also possible to use textured yarns, being yarns capable of assuming characteristics of greater volume and elasticity, thanks to thermo-mechanical treatments.
Based on customer specifications, Technofabric produces a wide range of raw nylon fabrics that can even be dyed or combined with other fibres (polyester, cotton, and so on).

Thanks to an exclusive technology developed within the company, nylon can be subjected to stretching and thermal stabilisation treatments, to achieve maximum dimensional stability and minimum longitudinal elongation (known as crimp).

Nylon fabrics can also be subjected to the following treatments:

  • • Polyurethane treatment
  • • Treatment with water- and oil-repellent substances for impregnation or coating
  • • Treatment with RFL (Resorcinol-Formaldehyde-Latex) for impregnation or coating (single and double-face) to facilitate adhesion
  • • Anti-mould treatment
  • • UV protection
