COTTON FIBRE FABRICS
TECHNOFABRIC: PRODUCTION OF COTTON FIBRE FABRICS FOR CLOTHING AND OFFSET DIGITAL PRINTING
Cotton is a 100% natural cellulose fibre, obtained from processing the seeds of a group of plants of the Mallow family (genus Gossypium), generally grown in various countries between the latitudes 40° N and 40° S.
Cotton fibre fabrics can vary in appearance, cleanliness, maturity and – above all – in the length of the fibre, considered as the average of the lengths of the individual fibres. The longer, thinner and more resistant cotton fibre is, the better! In fact, thanks to the longer fibres, it is possible to obtain thinner yarns.
Technofabric produces a broad selection of fabrics from cotton fiber fabrics that can be raw, dyed or combined with other materials, such as polyester and nylon. Thanks to intensive research and development activities, the company has created exclusive technology for achieving the maximum dimensional stability of the cotton fibre fabrics and the minimum longitudinal elongation.

TYPES OF COTTON
The different types of cotton can be classified intofour broad categories: Sea Island, Egyptian, American Upland and Indian.
Originally, the classification was linked to the area of origin. Today, however, the classification identifies the characteristics of the types of cotton. In detail:
NAME | RANGE OF FIBRE LENGTHS (mm) | MAIN USES |
---|---|---|
Sea Island | 40 - 60 | Fine high-quality yarns |
Egyptian | 30 – 50 | Good-quality yarns from fine to medium |
American Upland | 20 – 40 | Medium to coarse yarns for industrial uses |
Indian | 10 – 30 | Coarse and irregular yarns |
CHARACTERISTICS OF COTTON
The qualities of cotton justify its broad use in many sectors. In detail, the characteristics of cotton are:
In detail, the characteristics of Aramid are:
- • Immersion in Water: Cotton swells but the strength of wet yarn is about 20% higher than that of dry yarn. After drying, the properties return to their original levels.
- • Moisture: The standard regain of moisture for cotton is 8.5%.
- • Water Resistance (% dry): 120
- • Heat Resistance: Goodup to 150° C.
- • Melting Point: Decomposes above 230° C.
- • Acid Resistance: It is attacked by hot diluted and cold concentrated acids. Traces of acids not carefully washed, after certain dyeing and finishing processes, can lead to a progressive softening of the fibre, with a consequent loss of resistance.
- • Alkali Resistance: Cotton is alkali resistant but does swell.
- • Solvents: Not attackable by hydrocarbon, aromatic or chlorinated solvents. It dissolves in some mineral acids, such as 70% sulphuric acid or in cuprammonium hydroxide solution.
- • Combustion: Cotton burns easily but carbonises in an oxygen-poor atmosphere.
- • Cotton is susceptible to microbiological attacks, especially mould.

COTTON FABRICS
Cotton fabrics are very compact and low-resistance and, thanks to the short fibres, are an excellent adhesion adjuvant. For these reasons, cotton is widely employed alone or in combination with synthetic fibres.
In the latter case, resistance is mainly achieved from synthetic fibres, whilst cotton contributes both tovolumeand toachieving the desired adhesion.
Based on customer specifications, our company produces a wide range of raw or dyed fabrics in cotton fibre or in cotton combined with other fibres, such as polyester and nylon.
All fabrics – thanks to an exclusive technology developed within the company – can be subjected to a thermo-stabilisation and stretching treatment to obtain maximum dimensional stability and minimum longitudinal elongation (known as crimp).
Cotton fabrics can also be subjected to the following treatments:
- • Polyurethane treatment
- • Treatment with water- and oil-repellent substances for impregnation or coating
- • Treatment with RFL (Resorcinol-Formaldehyde-Latex) for impregnation or coating (single and double-face) to facilitate adhesion.
- • Anti-mould treatment
- • UV protection
